The Fresno chapter of Project Save A Mouth (PSAM) will attend the Sierra Vista Mall’s 2nd Annual Back to School Bash this Saturday to promote positive oral health to the estimated 2,500 event attendees who need the help and guidance most in our community.
The practice’s presentation and information/items they will distribute is part of the continued initiative of PSAM, a national initiative working on local levels to encourage better oral health awareness and prevent serious illnesses that are brought on in result of poor oral hygiene.
In a study in Fresno County by the Department of Community Health in 2006, the most recent study of its kind, they found that 65% of Kindergarten students and nearly 80% of third grade students have experienced dental disease. Four out of ten of those children go untreated. They also deduced that low income children and non-white children are much more likely to have dental disease and suffer the consequences. Fresno’s numbers are much more devastating than most of the other counties throughout the rest of California.
Sponsored by the Clovis Police Department, Sonitrol, and Clovis Area Recreation, The Sierra Vista Mall’s 2nd Annual Back to School Bash will be a day of family filled fun at the mall’s center court. Pre-filled backpacks full of school supplies and essentials will be handed out to local children and their families who need help preparing for the upcoming school year. There will be music, free school supplies, crafts, face painting, and more. The event is this Saturday, August 5, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.
Information about PSAM is available at www.projectsaveamouth.com/Fresno. The website showcases the negative effects that poor oral health can have on the entire body and what preventative measures should be done now to avoid the consequences. More information about Fresno Oral Maxillofacial Surgery & Dental Implant Center, the founders of the local Fresno PSAM chapter, can be found at www.fresnooralsurgery.com and their Facebook page www.facebook.com/fresnooralsurgery.
In addition to participating in this event, the Fresno chapter of PSAM has visited multiple elementary schools in the area, teaching them about best oral health practices. When the public adopts proper oral hygiene at a young age, we can prevent serious illnesses in their lives that will hinder them from pursuing their dreams. The chapter also ran a social media contest called “I Save Smiles,” where people posted photos of themselves wearing PSAM tee shirts, showing their support for this important cause.
