A few months back, I tweeted that it was time for Fresno’s Mayor Ashley Swearengin to give former Fresno Bee writer, taco lover and all-around great guy Mike Osegueda (aka Mike Oz) a key to the city, and while the idea was favorably received online, the movement didn’t go far. Mike Oz is still key-less, as far as I know.
That should definitely change after his most recent activity, which happened Thursday night in several spots in downtown Fresno, including near the Poverello House.
According to ABC30, Mike Oz was the chief organizer behind Thursday’s free taco event, where more than 200 people were able to eat a great meal thanks to the Fresno Grizzlies, Taco Truck Throwdown and El Premio Mayor, which also all deserve major props for joining in. Much-needed sweaters and blankets were also given out.
Mike Oz does an outstanding job with Yahoo! Sports’ Big League Stew blog — be sure to check out his popular “Opening 25-Year-Old Baseball Cards” series, including a classic one with New York Mets-for-life Bobby Bonilla — but we don’t want his work in the Fresno community to go overlooked (or underappreciated).
In addition to his Yahoo! duties, Mike Oz is the genius behind the Ozmosis radio show on New Rock 104.1 (Sundays at 9 p.m.) and the man who helped launch hugely popular Fresno events such as Taco Truck Throwdown and FresYes Fest, as well as Tacos, Brews & Jams (TB&J) and most recently, last summer’s Chill, which featured a fantastic collection of desserts, live music, shopping and beer.
Osegueda quickly deflects any praise for his efforts and would be the first to tell you he doesn’t produce any of these events alone. Our community should be incredibly thankful to everyone who helped out last night — the owner of El Premio Mayor deserves special mention — but it’s often Mike Oz who generates the great ideas and puts them in motion. And for that, we suggest that one of Mayor-elect Lee Brand’s first acts in office should be to get Mike Oz an official key to the city. Let’s make it happen.
