Children’s Bureau announces new venture: Dads Matter

Children’s Bureau has introduced Dads Matter, a father involvement program based out of Orange County, Calif. It’s currently only offered in Orange County, but hopefully the program will expand to other regions — Fresno, anyone? — before too long.

Participants in the program can include fathers or father figures who are in search of becoming the best ‘father’ they can be. Dads Matter encourages men to develop strong parenting skills, maintain healthy relationships, and ensure economic stability. The services will take place at family resource centers (FRCs) in Anaheim, Santa Ana, and Huntington Beach.

“The need for a program supporting fathers is undeniable,” says Alex Morales, President and CEO of Children’s Bureau. “We believe that dads are capable of being as strong of a parent as moms can be, which is why we’re excited to now offer personalized training, resources and support to these men so they can reach their full potential.”

Dads Matter focuses on fostering an environment for fathers to further their parenting skills and strengthen family bonds. One of Dads Matter’s programs is called SFI, or Supporting Father Involvement, intended to help build individual characteristics of the parents and improve parent-child, couple, and co-parenting relationship quality.

This 32-hour curriculum allows fathers to work with facilitators and other participating dads to increase their ability to care for their kids. An additional program offered is Couples Group where multiple couples participate in a dynamic series as a group that encourages personal, professional and parental growth.

Other services include father-child activities such as arts and crafts and outdoor activities encouraging “daddy and me” time, along with a workforce readiness workshop that includes interview prep and wardrobe assistance for fathers in need.

About Dads Matter

Dads Matter is a father involvement program based in Orange County through Children’s Bureau of Southern California. It focuses on creating an environment for fathers and families in which connections are enriched, economic stability is supported, and individuals discover the value of involvement.

Dads Matter’s expectation is that from the initial invitation, dads are expected to be a part of the process, because they matter. Dads Matter is funded with a five-year grant by the United States Department of Health and Human Services, Administration for Children and Families. This is Children’s Bureau’s first federal grant to be awarded in its 112-year history.

Funding for Dads Matter was provided by the United States Department of Health and Human Services, Administration for Children and Families, Grant: # 90FK0110. These services are available to all eligible persons, regardless of race, gender, age, disability, or religion.
